Fulfillment To-Do’s for New Business Owners

When starting a new e-commerce business, there are a number of steps necessary to get your operation up and running:

  • Have a killer product or assortment of products that are in high demand
  • Build a fully-functional e-commerce website that is optimized to convert visitors into buyers
  • Attract customers through effective marketing campaigns

However, you may have neglected an important aspect of running an e-commerce business that can ensure that new customers never return: errant fulfillment. An improperly shipped delivery, poorly-packed package or incomplete order can ruin the chances of a shopper returning.

Michael Koploy of the reviews company SoftwareAdvice.com recently put together a starter’s guide to optimal ecommerce fulfillment. Koploy advises new business owners to do the following:

  • Understand your current capabilities by benchmarking fulfillment metrics such as inventory accuracy, order turnaround time and return rate
  • Build specialized fulfillment teams to focus on order processing, picking, packing and shipping to eliminate waste and optimize processes
  • Know when to outsource fulfillment to third-party logistics operations or drop shippers if stocking and fulfilling orders is stunting your company’s growth
